Prison official regains freedom after six days in captivity

Innocent Ogbu, deputy superintendent of corrections (DSC) at the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has regained freedom after six days in captivity.

Rabiu Shuaibu, spokesperson of the NCoS in Niger state, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday.

The senior prison official was reportedly freed on Friday night.

He is receiving medical treatment in Minna, the Niger state capital.

Ogbu was kidnapped on November 23, alongside 15 other passengers who were travelling to Enugu in a commercial bus.

He was due to attend the DSC development course at the correctional training school in Enugu.

The abductors were said to have demanded N10 million in ransom from the family of the prison official.

It remains unclear if the ransom was paid.

Shuaibu did not confirm the release of other travellers.
