‘Procurement fraud’: Labour strike stalls Emefiele’s arraignment

The arraignment of Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been stalled due to the nationwide strike by labour unions.

Despite a restraining order of court, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Monday evening, directed their members and affiliates to withdraw their services beginning from Monday.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) also directed its members to comply with the directive.

At the federal capital territory high court on Wednesday, the gates were locked.

Emefiele was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in June.

On July 25, he was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Ikoyi and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.

However, he was rearrested by the DSS in the court premises on the same day.

In August, the court struck out the suit after the federal government filed an application to withdraw the charge of “illegal possession of firearms” against Emefiele.

A fresh 20-count charge was then filed before the FCT high court by the federal ministry of justice.

The former CBN governor and his co-defendants are accused of engaging in conspiracy and procurement fraud, among others.

Emefiele was eventually transferred to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on October 26.

On November 8, the former CBN governor was released from detention after Olukayode Adeniyi, the judge, granted him bail.
