Property ‘worth millions’ destroyed in Niger state gas plant explosion

A gas plant has exploded in Sabon Wuse, along the Kaduna expressway in Niger state, destroying property “worth millions of naira”.

The explosion occurred on Saturday during a gas transloading operation from a trailer tanker to a surface tank beside Kalasma filling station.

Both the trailer and the gas plant were completely burnt, including a car belonging to Abubakar Yakubu, which was parked nearby.

The fire also spread to the nearby Ngeil Grains Processing Factory, destroying “550 bags of beans and six bags of soya beans”.

Abdullahi Baba-Arah, director general of the Niger state emergency management agency (NSEMA), said no lives were lost, adding that property “worth millions of naira” was destroyed in the fire.

“The incident happened during transloading of gas from a trailer tanker to a surface tank,” Baba-Arah told Punch.

“Both the trailer and the gas plant were completely burnt, along with a car belonging to Abubakar Yakubu.

“The fire also gutted Ngeil Grains Processing Factory, destroying hundreds of bags of beans and soya beans.

“As of the time of filing this report, no lives were lost, and the fire has been brought under control.”

The explosion is the third in Niger state this year, following two recent tanker fires.

On January 18, a tanker explosion in Gurara LGA killed at least 98 people and left 69 others injured.

The victims were reportedly scooping petrol from the fallen tanker when it ignited.

Another explosion occurred on January 27 along the Agaie/Lapai road in Agaie LGA of the state.
