Pros, internationals to jostle for 2017 Captain Cup honours

Activities for the 2017 edition of IBB Captain Cup tournament began in Abuja on Tuesday.

The tournament is in honour of Okey Igweh, the outgoing captain of the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

A maximum field of 350 amateur players will play at the tournament.

They will play either the shotgun format or with a group of players teeing off on both nines.

Igweh in his address to the media said: “Activities lined up for the Captain’s Cup is for the enjoyment of members, invitees and guests.”

“We have extended invitations to most captains from all part of Nigeria. The Ooni of Ife will be father of the day.

“We are expecting guests from our neighbour- Ghana, South Africa, Spain, US and France but to mention a few.

“Invitations have been extended to most of the captains from other part of Nigeria.”

Professional players and club caddies will set the ball rolling on Thursday, while Nigeria will compete against ‘the rest of the world’ on Friday.

Speaking about his tenure, Igweh said, “Every good thing must come to an end someday. We have been able to do a lot of things during my tenure.

“We improved the golf course, made the greens playable and carried out a comprehensive dredging of the course last year which ensured the course was not closed for a day because of erosion problems.

“We upgraded the course which is also mapped on GPRS.”

The tournament will end with an award night which will be graced by eminent personalities, including the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Mohammed Musa Bello, the FCT minister.
