Protest as car ‘driven by gov’s son’ crushes student to death

Aggrieved students of Government Secondary School, Lafia, Nasarawa state, on Monday, took to the streets to protest the alleged killing of their colleague, Ovye Amos, a junior secondary school II student, by a son of Umar Al-Makura,the state governor.

According to Channels Television, Amos, who was knocked down by a car allegedly driven by one Khaleel Umar Al-Makura, died on the spot.

It took the intervention of the police, the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps, their teachers and government to calm down students who where threatening fire and brimstone.

Goodluck Agwu, senoior prefect of the school, said that the deceased had gone out to buy batteries for his torch light when he was hit by a car allegedly belonging to Khaleel around 8:00pm on Sunday.

Agwu explained that the school has no electricity supply and students had to used torchlight at night.

Agwu also complained the the absence of security men in the school caused people to enter and exit the school premises at will.

Aliyu Tijjani, Nasarawa state commissioner of education, while addressing the students at the schools parade ground, expressed his sympathy and promised to bring the culprit to book.

“I want to express my profound dismay and sadness over what happened here yesterday. It is unfortunate, very very unfortunate,” Tijani said.

“The government of Nasarawa state has already taken measures into ensuring that the person that perpetrated this killing is brought to book. He has already been arrested.”

However, the assurance given by Tijani did not calm the students as they remained agitated, insisting that justice must be done.

Maikudi Shehu, area commander of the Nigeria Police, Lafia area office, also assured the students that the culprit had been arrested and the police will brief them on developments concerning incident.

“It is a painful thing, we sympathise and empathise with you and we assure you that investigation is ongoing and that particular culprit as we are speaking now is under detention in our custody,” Shehu said.

“We will keep you informed of developments as they unfold.”
