Protest rocks Kano over ‘blasphemy’ against Prophet Muhammad

Some angry youth on Wednesday staged a protest at the Hisbah office in Kano state over a song allegedly blaspheming Prophet Muhammad.

One Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, said to be a member of the Tijjaniyah sect, reportedly composed a song containing derogatory words about Muhammad.

The protesters, led by one Idris Ibrahim (also known as Baba Idris), said they were at the office to notify the government to either penalise Sharif-Aminu or allow them take the law into their hands.

They claimed that similar incidents had happened in the state but were swept under the carpet.

Sharif-Aminu and his members have since fled the area.

However, his family house located at Sharifai quarters in Kano Municipal local government, was set ablaze last week Friday by irate youth.

Addressing the protesters, Harun Ibn-Sina, Kano Hisbah commander, said the government was on top of the situation, adding that the  parents of singer have been arrested and are in police custody.
