PSG claim third straight French title

Paris St Germain (PSG) secured their third Ligue 1 title with a 2-1 win over Montpellier at the Stade de la Mosson.

PSG came into the match knowing either a point or Lyon’s failure to beat Bordeaux at home, would be enough to clinch the title and as it happened, Lyon drew 1-1.

Blaise Matuidi opened the scoring for the visitors before Ezequiel Lavezzi’s thunderous strike made it 2-0.

The hosts pulled one back as Anthony Mounier’s cross-cum-shot deceived everyone and sailed past PSG keeper Salvatore Sirigu to make it 2-1 at the interval.

Laurent Blanc’s side held firm in the face of mounting pressure in the second half to close out the win and, coupled with a draw for Lyon, open up an unassailable eight-point lead at the top of the standings with one game remaining.

It was a fifth title in total for PSG, who were only founded in 1970.

With this victory, PSG equalled their top-flight record of eight straight wins in a row. They could extend the record with a ninth win against Reims at the Parc des Princes next Saturday in front of their fans.
