George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), has issued a service-wide circular on persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The circular makes it compulsory for ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to comply with national accessibility regulations.

Released on May 22, 2024, the circular mandates all MDAs to implement measures enabling PWDs to access public services, facilities and opportunities without hindrances.

The National Commission for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) has urged all MDAs to fully comply with the SGF’s directive and to collaborate for an inclusive environment for PWDs.

“This compliance will be pivotal in dismantling barriers to accessibility and fostering a society where everyone, irrespective of their abilities, can thrive,” the statement reads.

“We also encourage all stakeholders, including development partners and advocacy groups, to continue supporting these initiatives to ensure widespread awareness and implementation.”
