Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Kogi have pleaded with the state government to complete a rehabilitation centre which they say is crucial to their integration into society.

Eliazar Elukpo, chairman of the state’s disability organisation, issued a statement on Thursday highlighting their plight.

He spoke about their desire to contribute to the development of the state.

Elukpo explained that many PWDs have received trainings in barbing, shoemaking, hairdressing, and block selling.

However, they lack the capital to start businesses and put these skills to use, he added. He expressed concern that these skills could go to waste without the support of a functioning rehabilitation centre.

The chair appealed to anyone who can intervene, asking them to help complete the centre so that PWDs in Kogi can have the same opportunities as their counterparts in states like Oyo, Lagos, and Enugu.

Elukpo noted that the centre would enable them learn more trades and potentially find employment, rather than resorting to begging on the streets of Lokoja.

He also harped on the importance of the centre for those who cannot afford higher education, stating that it would provide a pathway to self-sufficiency.

Elukpo said he believes that completing the rehabilitation centre would demonstrate the government’s commitment to supporting PWDs in Kogi state and across Nigeria.
