Six-year-old chess player chases gold at National Sports Festival

Deborah Quickpen, youngest athlete at the 19th National Sports Festival, says she will win the gold medal in chess.

The six-year-old who is representing Rivers told TheCable that she has her eyes fixed on the top prize.

“I play to win. Yes, I see myself winning the gold medal in chess at the National Sports Festival,” Quickpen told TheCable.

“I am saying thank you to my parents for supporting me in playing chess.

“I want my brother to play like me. I want to train him.

“I am top in my class in school as well.”

The primary three pupil schooling in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state capital, said she will dedicate any medal she wins at the festival to her coach.

“I am going to dedicate any medal that I win at the festivals to my coach Boma, she added.
