Rainstorm destroys ‘150 houses’ in Kano

At least 150 houses and farmlands are believed to have been destroyed and many people rendered homeless, following a downpour in Gwarzo local government of Kano state.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.

Ibrahim Shuaibu, a witness, said the fence of Gwarzo local government secretariat also collapsed while many vehicles were submerged as a result of the flood.

Shuaibu listed Sabuwar Unguwa, Abuja quarters and some parts of Katambawa as the worst affected areas.

Aliyu Bashir, executive secretary of the State Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (SERERA), confirmed the development.

But he said the agency could not ascertain the number of the houses destroyed.

Bashir said a team combining officials of SERERA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had been dispatched to the area to assess the extent of the damage caused by the flood.
