Re-election bid: Makinde wins Oyo PDP governorship ticket

Seyi Makinde, Oyo governor, has been declared the winner of the governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in the state

The incumbent governor scored 1,040 votes to defeat Hazeem Gbolarumi, who was his only opponent in the race. 

The election held at the Lekan Salami sports complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, on Wednesday.

According to NAN, Mutiu Agboke, resident electoral commissioner (REC) in Oyo state, and Abiodun Onigate-Amosun, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) administrative secretary, witnessed the primary.

Announcing the results, Abdullahi MaiBasira, secretary of the PDP electoral committee, said 1,048 delegates were accredited to vote out of a 1,086 persons.

In his acceptance speech, Makinde thanked the delegates for finding him worthy to be the party’s flagbearer for the 2023 governorship election.

“I’m not the most brilliant or the most upright person, yet you gave me your mandate. Thank you for believing in me and in our party, PDP,” he said.

“Trust is like a building. For every building to stand, it must have a solid foundation; the foundation for trust is truth.”

Makinde also assured PDP members of his commitment to working for the progress of the party.

The Oyo governor had, in April 2022, announced his intention to seek re-election.

“If the good people of Oyo state desire it, we will serve for four more years,” he had said.
