The Super Eagles’ first World Cup goal was nothing fancy, just a simple tap-in, however, the build-up, significance and Rashidi Yekini’s passionate celebration contributed to making it unforgettable.
It was the Eagles’ first appearance at a World Cup in 1994, and the opening match was against Bulgaria, then one of Europe’s best teams in terms of talent and experience.
Bulgaria fielded the likes of Krasimir Genchev Balakov, Nasko Petkov Sirakov, and Ivaylo Stoimenov Yordanov, including the dangerous striker Hristo Stochkov.

Stoichkov had scored a free kick that beat Peter Rufai and Nigeria’s defenders but it was ruled out by the referee. It was not his day to shine.
Yekini was responsible for almost 50 percent of Nigeria’s goals in the qualifiers, so it was not surprising that he scored the team’s first goal following a lovely cross from George Finidi.
The Super Eagles went on to defeat Bulgaria 3-1 with the other goals coming from Daniel Amokachi and Emmanuel Amunike.

But Rashidi Yekini stood out as the hero of the day. His destiny and legacy as a legend were on that day sealed forever. The moment will forever reverberate in the minds of Nigerians.
Yekini went on to score 37 goals in 60 international games, still a record in the Super Eagles to date.
Relive the special moment.
