Real Madrid win Club World Cup

Real Madrid have lifted the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup thanks to a 2-0 victory over San Lorenzo in Saturday’s final.

Sergio Ramos opened scoring with a header in the 37th minute. Gareth Bale added a second half goal to earn Los Blancos their fourth trophy of 2014 after winning the Copa del Rey, UEFA Champions League and European Super Cup.

It is also Real’s 22nd consecutive victory in all competitions, as they close in on Ajax’s mark of 26 back-to-back wins during the 1971-72 season.

The win is Real’s first ever Club World Cup championship, which was first contested in 2005, but it is the fourth time that they have won a worldwide honour, adding to their Intercontinental Cup triumphs in 1968, 1998 and 2000.

Real currently hold a one-point lead in La Liga – with a game in-hand – the only major trophy Carlo Ancelotti is yet to win with the club.

Oceania Champions League winners Auckland City of New Zealand were victorious in the third-place game played earlier on Saturday, beating Mexico and CONCACAF Champions League winners Cruz Azul, 4-2 on penalties.

Ryan de Vries put Auckland City ahead just before halftime before Joao Rojas pulled Cruz Azul back onto level terms 12 minutes into the second half.
