Report: Dangote refinery to get 12m barrels of crude from US

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is expected to receive up to 12 million barrels of crude oil from the United States.

According to the Africa Report, the refinery is slated to take delivery of the product by February. 

“The 12 million barrels of crude has already left the United States and will land in Nigeria next month,” an insider told the publication.

“About 12 million barrels of crude have departed the US and should arrive in Nigeria by February.”

The development comes amid the refinery’s efforts to ramp up production.

The plant had received about 24 million barrels of Nigerian supply in October and November — a move that suggested the company was increasingly turning to local feedstock.

The 650,000 bpd facility was expected to receive 13 to 14 shipments — out of Nigeria’s monthly programme of about 50 cargoes — between October and November 2024.

Nigeria officially commenced the sale of crude oil and refined petroleum products in naira in October, 2024.

The development was intended to ease supply challenges, boost local refining, and ultimately end Nigeria dependence on petroleum products importation.

But the latest US shipment may signal the refinery’s return to external suppliers for feedstock as local supply gaps persist.

In November last year, Edwin Devakumar, the vice-president of Dangote Industries Limited, said the federal government’s initiative to sell crude priced in the local currency was faltering, as the plant was still unable to secure adequate supplies.

Devakumar said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited had failed to meet its supply commitment of 385,000 bpd to the refinery.
