The house of representatives has asked the ministry of information and national orientation to create more awareness on the rights of People living With Disabilities (PWDs).

This followed the adoption of a motion by Bashiru Dawodu, who represents Oshodi-Isolo federal constituency of Lagos, during plenary on Wednesday.

The lawmaker had emphasised the need to sensitise the public about the rights and inclusion of PWDs, and had asked the ministry to promote and educate the public about the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

He said 23 of the 36 states in Nigeria are yet to domesticate the Act, adding that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has put the number of PWDs in Nigeria at 30 million.

He said the law was enacted to ensure full participation and inclusion of PWDs in all sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Adopting the motion, the house said PWDs, who constitute nearly 15 percent of the Nigerian population, are some of the most marginalised groups in the country.

The reps also appealed to states to domesticate the law and mandated the house committee on disability matters to drive compliance.
