Reps consider naming n’assembly commission complex after Ghali Na’Abba

The house of representatives has resolved to name the national assembly commission complex after Ghali Na’Abba, a late former speaker of the house.

The resolution was sequel to the adoption of a motion by Aliyu Madaki, a lawmaker from Kano state, during the plenary on Thursday.

Presenting the motion, titled “Need to immortalise former Speaker, Ghali Na’Abba by naming the national assembly service commission building after him”, Madaki said at the beginning of the fourth Republic in 1999, the late Na’Abba was elected as a member of the house of representatives.

He said Na’Abba was an influential speaker of the house between 1999 and 2003 on the account of his “courageous, dynamic, and outspoken pursuit of legislative independence”.

“Na’Abba, as speaker, embarked on a number of measures to ensure the independence of the legislature, which included but were not limited to profound scrutiny of the budget framework,” NAN quoted Madaki as saying.

Adopting the motion, the house resolved to honour Na’Abba, by naming the national assembly service commission complex after him.

The house referred the matter to the senate for concurrence.

Na’Abba died on September 27, 2023 in Abuja at the age of 65.
