Reps extend recess by one week, to resume plenary April 23

The house of representatives has postponed resumption of plenary.

The lower legislative chamber had, on March 20, embarked on Easter and Eid al-Fitri holidays, after passing a bill to extend the implementation of the capital component of the 2023 supplementary budget to June 2024.

The lawmakers were scheduled to resume on April 16.

But in a statement addressed to lawmakers on Friday, Yahaya Danzariya, clerk of the house of representatives, said the resumption date has been shifted to April 23.

Danzariya said the postponement is to enable lawmakers to resume at the main chamber, as renovation should have been completed by then.

“This adjustment is necessary to allow for the completion of renovations to the chamber of the House of Representatives, ensuring its readiness for plenary sessions, henceforth,” the statement reads.

“All inconveniences are highly regretted. Your understanding or cooperation regarding this change is highly appreciated.

“Please make necessary adjustments to your schedules and ensure your presence on the new resumption date.

“I wish you all productive constituency engagements during this extended recess period.”

The lawmakers moved to a temporary chamber in April 2022.
