The house of representatives has invited Ibrahim Idris, inspector-general of police (IGP), over the shooting of Joseph Izu, a defender of the Shooting Stars Football Club (3SC), Ibadan.
Izu was holidaying in his home town of Okaki in Rivers state when he was allegedly killed by men of the joint task force (JTF).
At a press conference in Port Harcourt, the military told journalists that the footballer was killed at a cultists’ shrine.
The house mandated its committees on police and human rights to investigate not just Izu’s death but other cases of extra-judicial killings such as that of; Innocent Kokorifa, Godgift Oduku and one Inyang.

The resolutions of the house was sequel to a motion on matters of public importance sponsored by Diri Douye from Bayelsa state.
While moving the motion on the floor of the house, Douye described the extra-judicial killings as “worrisome.”
He said though the JTF have a duty to protect lives and property, they must do it with caution and respect for human lives.

“It is worrisome that if this trend is not checked, it may lead to a breakdown of law and order with people forced to defend themselves from attacks from the very police who have been paid to by tax payers to protect them,” Douye told the house.
Contributing to the debate, Ossai Ossai, lamented the increasing cases of extra-judicial killings in the country. He urged the committees to do a in-depth investigation into the matter.
The adopted the motion after it was put to a voice vote by Yakubu Dogara, the speaker.
