The house of representatives committee on university education has summoned Muazu Gusau, the vice-chancellor of Federal University Gusau (FUGUS), over alleged poor budget implementation.
Abubakar Fulata, the chairman of the committee, spoke during its oversight visit to the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja on Tuesday.
NAN reports that the committee assessed the budget performance of universities covering the 2022, 2023, and 2024 financial cycles.
Fulata said that his committee had visited all the federal universities under its jurisdiction except the Federal University Gusau.

He said the oversight visit was not aimed at witch-hunting but was in line with the constitutional provisions.
He said the FUGUS vice-chancellor not only halted the committee’s oversight visit to the school but also refused to provide details regarding the implementation of the 2022, 2023, and 2024 budgets.
Fulata said that his committee was not out to create problems but always in search of solutions to problems.

He said it was improper for the committee to approve the 2025 budget for an institution which had failed to provide budget performances for over three years.
During the committee’s visit, it tasked the management of the NUC with improving the standard of education in Nigerian universities.
Chris Maiyaki, the acting executive secretary of NUC, promised to promote quality standards in all the federal, state, and private universities in the country.
