The house of representatives says Nigerians should allow the police to conclude the investigation into the allegation of assault against Alex Ikwechegh, a lawmaker representing Aba north/south federal constituency of Abia state.
Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has made headlines for “assaulting” Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.
The incident occurred on October 27 in the Maitama district of Abuja, the nation’s capital.
In the viral video, Ikwechegh is seen in a heated exchange with the driver, whom he accused of disrespect for asking him to approach the car to receive his package.

The lawmaker is seen hurling insults at Abuwatseya and threatening to “make him disappear”.
The federal capital territory (FCT) police command had said Ikwechegh was in its custody for questioning.
However, in a statement on Monday evening, Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the house of representatives, said the lower legislative chamber “takes these allegations very seriously”.

“As elected officials, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethical conduct and accountability in our official engagements and privately,” the statement reads.
“Any behaviour that falls short of these standards is a matter of concern, and we are committed to addressing such issues with the utmost seriousness.
“We are aware that the matter is now before the Nigeria police, and we urge the public to allow the due process of investigation to unfold.”
Rotimi said the house is committed to “upholding the values of accountability, transparency, and ethical behaviour that defines” the parliament.
