Republican party sweeps US mid-term election

The Republican party dominated the mid-term election that was conducted in the United States on Tuesday.

The party’s governorship candidates emerged in the Democratic strongholds of Massachusetts, Maryland and Illinois, the state of President Barack Obama.

Republican also secured about one-third of the senate, the entire house of representatives and many state and local offices.

However, Tim Scott, a Republican candidate, made history  by becoming the first black to be elected as a senator in South Carolina since 1877.

Scott is the fifth black person elected to the Senate.

In all the party won additional seven states, as it was in control of 29 out of 50 states in the country before the election.

Mitch McConnell, a Republican Senator, told the BBC that the result of the election was a vote against “a government that people can no longer trust”.

An analyst told Reuters that the just-concluded poll could be a deciding factor of the 2016 election.

He said party control of governorship in the US is always critical in the White House contest because candidates use governors to help build state-by-state support toward a possible nomination.

Dianne Bystrom, the director of Iowa State University’s Carrie Chapman Catt Centre for Women and Politics, said Americans tend to trust the Republican Party more than the Democratic Party with fixing the economy.

“It was a Republican sweep tonight,” she said.

“I think it’s tied to people feeling the country is moving in the wrong direction and on the wrong track.”

In Pennsylvania, however, Tom Corbett, a Republican governor, lost to Tom Wolf, a Democrat, making him the first incumbent governor in his state’s modern history to fail to win a second term.

Conceding defeat, Corbett said he had made tough choices as governor, knowing they would be unpopular.

“I said I might be a one-term governor, and I am. And I am proud,” he said.

  1. Poor writing. You do not state that Senator Scott is also a Republican. The “however” which begins the third paragraph is therefore contradictory.
