The Bodija Estate Residents’ Association (BERA) has announced a memorial service to honour the victims of the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

On January 16, at least five residents died, and many sustained injuries in an explosion that occurred at Adeyi Avenue in the Bodija area of Ibadan.

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo state, said the explosion, which let many houses destroyed, was caused by illegal miners who stored explosive devices in an apartment in the area.

Last December, Makinde inaugurated a 10-member committee to oversee the disbursement of relief funds to the victims.

The governor said the committee would oversee the management and disbursement of the relief fund to those who lost properties to the explosion.

He added that the government would only support the people affected, not compensation.
