Several residents have been hospitalised in Kano state after reportedly consuming contaminated drinks.

Shaba Muhammad, coordinator of the National Agency of Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Kano, said the agency has collected water samples and locally-processed drinks in the state to investigate the cause of the illness.

Speaking on Monday in Kano, Muhammad noted that the agency received a series of reports of a strange disease in Kano metropolis, suspected to be caused by contaminated sachet water and locally-processed drinks.

He noted that the collected samples have been taken to the laboratory in Kaduna for analysis, adding that a team of officials had visited the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Kano, and other areas to speak with the infected patients.

“We collected samples of the suspected water and the products for analysis to establish the cause of the disease.”

He urged residents of the state to be conscious of the products they consume, adding that the agency would step up its surveillance on fake and counterfeit products in the state.
