Restrict cargo operations to designated areas, FAAN tells agents

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has called on cargo agents to operate within designated areas at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) terminal.

The authority gave the directive in response to an online video showing a brawl between its employee and an individual over cargo charges at the airport.

In a statement on Monday, Obiageli Orah, director of public affairs and consumer protection at the FAAN, clarified that the disagreement was between its staff and a cargo agent — not a passenger, contrary to reports.

The authority said the agent was engaging in illegal operations at the airport.

“She refused to pay the stipulated charges for the cargo and behaved in an unacceptable manner, damaging equipment and straining our resources,” the statement reads.

“We would also like to clarify that there was no form of molestation by FAAN staff, neither was there any request for a bribe from our staff during the incident.

“This was simply an act of blackmail. Our staff was simply ensuring that the correct levy was paid.

“We urge all cargo agents and members of the public to note that cargo operations should be restricted to designated cargo areas, utilising proper vehicles, personnel, and pay the levies.”

This, the FAAN said, is in line with its cargo policies, which are designed to ensure adherence to international best practices, prevent damage to airport facilities, and prioritise customer service and safety.

“Specifically, we impose a fine of N5,000.00 (Five Thousand Naira) on non-compliant cargoes for the following reasons: failure to utilize designated cargo terminals, damage to carousels resulting from improper cargo handling,” the authority added.

The FAAN reaffirmed its commitment to providing clear guidance on its policies and called on the public to adhere to the rules guiding airport operations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The authority said cooperation is essential to ensure a safe and efficient airport experience for all users.

On August 17, the FAAN announced it had concluded plans to set up magistrate courts in airport premises across the country to persecute violators of rules and anti-touting regulations.

The authority had also launched a task force to eliminate touting, extortion, and other illicit activities in Nigeria’s airports.
