Nigeria has the highest number of registered delegates at the ongoing 112th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to a list published by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Nigeria’s delegation to the conference is the largest of the 187 countries represented at the event.

The Nigerian contingent, led by Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, minister of state for labour and productivity, comprises 289 registered delegates.

The list includes 108 registered as “government delegates” and 62 names identified as “employers’ delegates”.

Brazil is second behind Nigeria with 191 delegates, followed by Argentina with 156 representatives.

Mexico also has 140 delegates, while Ghana’s contingent comprises 133 people.

The 112th ILC will end on June 14. The key issues to be addressed at the event include the protection of workers against the effects of climate change and biological hazards, the care economy and fundamental principles and rights at work.

The governing body that will lead the ILO from 2024 to 2027 will also be elected at the conference.

Nigerian labour unions are currently at loggerheads with the federal government over a new minimum wage. The organised labour only recently suspended a two-day nationwide strike.
