Richard Akinjide buried privately in Ibadan

Richard Akinjide, former attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, was buried in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, on Thursday.

Akinjide died at the age of 88 in Ibadan on April 21, 2020. He was known for his interpretation of twelve two-third of nineteen states during the 1983 political battle between Sheu Shagari, former president of Nigeria, and Obafemi Awolowo, former premier of old western region of Nigeria.

In a statement, Abayomi, first son of Akinjide, said earlier after his father’s death that burial arrangements were delayed because of COVID-19.

“Our beloved Patriarch, Chief Richard Osuolale Abimbola Akinjide, who passed on peacefully to glory on April 21, 2020, was laid to rest on Thursday, August 13, 2020 after a private funeral service by the family at The Chapel of St. Peter, The Rock, Jericho, Ibadan, within the family estate,” he said.

“This was done, in consultation with the Archbishop of Ibadan, Anglican Communion and the Oyo state government, due to the prevailing global public health crisis. At the appropriate time, a Celebration of Life Church Service and public events will be held in his honour.”
