You may have come across the statement ‘people like people like themselves’.
A need to be accepted by those whose friendship or respect one covets can conversely determine openness towards behaviors and irrational decision making which may vary from simple things like style, manner of speaking, where to hang-out for drinks, -to more complicated ones like who to marry, where to live, financial grants for summer vacation etc.

Social status used to solely depend on one’s family name but the rise of consumerism in the world has in effect given rise to social mobility. With the increasing availability of goods, people are more inclined to define themselves by what they possess.
The quest for a higher status has indeed accelerated and social pressures are at an all time high.
We have also found a better way to deal. Lying!

Now do not begin to imagine that you are the reasonable one who is free from all bias and irrational thinking.
Social acceptance affects all people. Old and young.
The main reason most of us lie is because we are afraid.
We are afraid that someone will know us and we wont be what they expected. We are afraid that interactions with others will get really messy. We are afraid we will put our vulnerabilities out there for others to see, and they will only use and abuse them. We are afraid and so we lie.

It is truly difficult to live our truth except as we constantly define our values and daily commit to bring them to the fore in our decision making and dealings with others.
Lying requires a lot of effort. When you lie you have to consider what you’re trying to hide, figure out a believable version of the opposite, give a convincing performance to sell that lie, and then remember it for the rest of eternity so you never get caught. Repeated behavior can become habitual.
Someday, even the best of us will crumble under this weight.
Develop a personal value system. It will give you structure and purpose and enable you express who you are and what is meaningful to you.

Falsehood will fail. Have the courage to face the truth.
Do the right thing; because it is right.
