The All Progressives Congress (APC) says Boma Brown, its campaign director in Opobo/Nkoro LGA of Rivers state, has been abducted by suspected political thugs.

The party said Brown was abducted shortly before a rally on Tuesday.

Speaking with reporters, Tonye Cole, the Rivers APC governorship candidate, said the thugs stormed the venue of the rally destroying equipment before abducting the campaign director.

Cole said people should be allowed to freely vote for whom they want without intimidation.

“This morning, we were on our way to Opobo and they went into our rally ground, scattered everything, and carried our local government coordinator forcefully,” the governorship candidate said.

“There was shooting and they dispersed everyone. Everybody should be allowed to choose freely who they want to vote for. We will still be in Opobo.

“Nothing is going to stop us. But right now, we have to go and find the kidnapped, abducted local government chairman.”

On his part, Darlington Nwauju, spokesperson of the APC in Rivers, described the incident as an “attack on democracy”.

“This is another barbaric attack on our democracy,” Nwauju said.

“Parties should be allowed to campaign freely and the electorate should be allowed to vote for the candidates of their choice. That is what democracy is all about and not the other way round.”

Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson of the police command in the state, was yet to comment on the development.
