Safer Internet Day: NGO launches tool for victims of online sexual abuse

TechSocietal, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has partnered with the United Kingdom (UK) government to launch a web tool that will help victims of image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) get free services and attention.

The tool, “Lawbrella,” is designed to connect dedicated technology lawyers, therapists, and counsellors, committed to safeguarding the digital rights of women and children.

The partnership with the UK government is through its digital access programme (DAP).

The web tool was launched to commemorate the International Safer Internet Day, held every February 6.

Speaking at the launch on Tuesday in Lagos, Tope Ogundipe, founder and executive director of TechSocietal, said Lawbrella is a comprehensive web tool that goes beyond traditional legal support.

Ogundipe said the tool is aimed at challenging injustice and inequity, improving the internet landscape, and upholding privacy rights in Nigeria.

“TechSocietal is a non-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening online protection for women and children. With Lawbrella, we are not just offering legal support; we are fostering change,” Ogundipe said.

“We are thrilled to have the support of the UK government through the Digital Access Programme in developing Lawbrella.

“This collaboration exemplifies the power of global partnerships in addressing digital inclusion and digital rights issues especially affecting vulnerable members of society, and creating impactful solutions.

“Lawbrella’s services include legal support for victims, advocacy for improved laws and policies, as well as education and awareness.

“Lawbrella seeks to challenge injustice and inequity, create a safer digital world for all, and contribute to a better online landscape in Nigeria for women and girls who are at greater risk of digital harm which reduces or restricts their use of digital technologies.”

She further said the tool will ensure privacy rights and the protection of personal information in the digital space.

Commenting on the launch,  Jonny Baxter, the British deputy high commissioner in Nigeria, said there is an urgent need for improved awareness in the battle against online gender-based violence, sexual abuse, and exploitation.

“Violence against women and children is a chilling reminder of the destructive impacts of gender inequality around the world,” Baxter said.

“Lawbrella is dedicated to empowering Nigerian women and  girls, providing them with necessary resources and  support against sexual exploitation and online abuse.”
