Sagamu bridge closed after petrol-tanker explosion

The Ogun state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the partial closure of the Sagamu interchange bridge along Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Speaking on Thursday, Clement Oladele, the state sector commander of the FRSC, said a section of the bridge will be closed on Friday.

Oladele said the temporary closure was as a result of the damage caused by the two tankers that exploded under the bridge on Christmas day.

On Wednesday, two tankers laden with fuel crashed under the bridge close to the FRSC emergency roadside clinic.

He said the FRSC had invited engineers from the federal ministry of works and housing to assess the bridge, and they advised that some sections be partially closed to avoid tragedy.

“The temporary closure is based on their professional advice that the fire had destroyed the integrity of that section of the bridge and it will not be safe for motorists until it had been reinforced,” the FRSC commander said.

Oladele asked motorists to cooperate with FRSC officials on the road and avoid plying that section of the bridge until it is repaired and opened for use.

He advised motorists travelling towards the bridge from the eastern part of the country via Ijebu-Ode to make a detour right at the back of the FRSC emergency roadside clinic and connect to Lagos–Ibadan expressway leading to Ogere.
