Salami bags brace in KuPS’s Finnish league win

Gbolahan Salami, KuPS FC of Finland forward, scored a brace as his side beat IFK Mariehamn 2-1 on Friday in the Veikkausliiga.

Salami gave his team the lead in the 59th minute, before Aleksei Kangaskolk equalised two minutes later for the visitors, Mariehamn.

In the 63rd minute, Salami restored KuPS’s lead, which turned out to be the match winner.

Salami has now scored 10 league goals this current campaign.

Also in action for KuPS were Nigerian duo Paul Onobi and Azubuike Egwuekwe.

Salami was part of the Nigeian U20 football team at the 2009 African Youth Championship. He was also part of the Nigeria U23 football team that failed to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics.

In January 2014, late Stephen Keshi invited him to be a part of the Nigeria senior national football team squad for the 2014 African Nation’s Championship.

He scored the only goal for the home-based Eagles in their opening 2-1 loss to Mali.

He was called into the squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification and scored a late goal as a substitute against Congo, but Nigeria lost 3-2 at home. His form earned him a start in the next game away to South Africa.
