Samson Itodo
The African Union (AU) has appointed Samson Itodo, the executive director of Yiaga Africa, to its newly established advisory group on artificial intelligence (AI).
Itodo will serve a four-year term, contributing to discussions on AI’s impact on peace, security, and governance across Africa.
The advisory group was set up following a resolution by the AU Peace and Security Council in June 2024, which called for a study on AI’s role in governance and conflict resolution.
The nine-member group will help the AU Commission assess AI’s implications for stability, democracy, and development.

The group will also explore ways to integrate AI into elections and peace-building, while ensuring data protection and transparency.
The group operates under Bankole Adeoye, the AU commissioner for political affairs, peace, and security, whose office is responsible for addressing political stability across the continent.
Reacting to the appointment, Itodo described it as an opportunity to help shape Africa’s future by ensuring AI is used responsibly to strengthen democracy, elections, and governance.

“I am honoured to serve and contribute to shaping Africa’s future through responsible AI governance in advancing elections, democracy and governance,” he said, in a statement on Thursday.
“This is a pivotal time to ensure technology enhances peace, security, and democratic processes across the continent.”
Itodo is widely recognised for his work in democratic governance and electoral integrity. He played a central role in the #NotTooYoungToRun campaign, which successfully lowered the minimum age for elective office.
Beyond his work in Nigeria, Itodo serves on the boards of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and the Kofi Annan Foundation.
