Sanctions await organisations over non-compliance with PWD employment, says NCPWD

James Lalu, executive secretary of NCPWD

James Lalu, executive secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), says sanctions await organisations who fail to comply with the 5 percent employment provision for PWDs.

He said this is in line with section 29 of the Discrimination against Persons With Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018.

Lalu who was represented by Musa Musa at the 101.1 FM human rights radio program on Thursday, gave a breakdown of the number of PWDs who are employed by various government agencies.

“As at today, over a hundred PWDs are on the payroll of the NCPWD,” he said.

Lalu said most of the people employed by these government agencies are now breadwinners.

He added that the commission would soon commence enforcement on those who do not obey the law, upon the expiration of the 5 year moratorium in January 2024.

Idowu Iwere, assistant director, human resources management at NCPWD, encouraged PWDs to register with the commission on the website www.ncpwd.org.ng for further engagements.
