Sanders: I’ll work with Hillary to defeat Trump

Bernie Sanders, Democratic Party presidential candidate, has bowed out of the race, vowing to work with Hillary Clinton to defeat Donald Trump of the Republican Party.

Speaking after a meeting with President Barack Obama, Sanders said he was looking forward to meet the flagbearer of his party.

Sanders’ new position is different from that two days ago when he told his supporters that “the struggle continues”, even after crushing defeats to Clinton in California and New Jersey.

Sanders garnered 12 million of the primary campaign’s 27 million votes. His meeting with Obama, which lasted an hour, took place at the White House.

“I spoke briefly to Secretary Clinton on Tuesday night and I congratulated her on her very strong campaign,” he said.

“I look forward to meeting with her in the near future to see how we can work together to defeat Donald Trump and to create a government which represents all of us and not just the one percent.”

Praising the Vermont senator for running a successful campaign, Obama said: “I thought that Bernie Sanders brought enormous energy and new ideas.”

However, he later announced his endorsement of Hillary’s candidacy.

Obama made this known in a video he posted to Clinton’s website after she secured the Democratic Party’s nomination within the week.

“I’m with her, I am fired up and I cannot wait to get out there and campaign for Hillary”, Obama said in the video.

He had been reluctant to jump into the race until the party’s nomination was settled.

Spokesman Josh Earnest had repeatedly deflected questions about when an endorsement would come.

On Tuesday, Clinton declared herself the party’s presumptive nominee after reaching the number of delegates needed to be named its standard-bearer in November elections.
