Sanwo-Olu imposes, then scraps curfew in Lagos

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has made a U-turn after initially announcing the imposition of a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the state.

The governor had made the announcement while giving an update on coronavirus in the state on Friday.

He said it was for the fumigation of the streets and busstops.

However, on Saturday, he said he had been advised otherwise.

The state tweeted: “Gov.@jidesanwoolu  dropped the idea of imposing a curfew in the state meant to allow the fumigation exercise of public space. Relying on experts advice, the Governor said the disinfectant is non toxic, noting that the exercise has commenced.

“He said: ‘I am pleased to note that we have taken possession of over 200 disinfecting machines, and starting today, we will be disinfecting all major highways, bus stops, markets, parks and other public areas.’

“The Governor also said during a live press conference that if there is a need for curfew, government will not hesitate to impose it. For now, everything remains the way they are.”

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the country has recorded 81 coronavirus cases of which 52 cases are in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu said the state is heading towards a lockdown but a number of factors are being considered before some decisions are made.

  1. Good morning Sir. I salute your prompt response to giving us great health assistance. God bless you Sir . But my fear is this, if disinfection is going on and people are still moving around, Is there any possibility of reinfecting the disinfected places again?
    God bless your efforts Sir.
