Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos state, has authorised the release of 55 inmates from correctional facilities across the state.

In a statement on Friday, Pedro Lawal, the state’s attorney-general and commissioner for justice, said the decision was based on recommendations from the advisory council on perogative of mercy.

He added that the order includes “immediate release of 40 inmates, while others are to be freed after serving additional terms of between three to six months.”

Pedro said the governor’s approval for the inmates’ release is in exercise of his powers under Section 212 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“It is also in line with the commitment of Mr. Governor to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State as part of the Justice Sector Reforms in the state,” he said.

“The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, in reaching its recommendations, exercised due diligence in its review of the applications brought before it, in line with applicable guidelines and information provided by the authorities of the correctional facilities.

“Factors considered included the nature of the offence, period of incarceration, age, health condition, and the behavioural conduct of the inmate.
