Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos state governor, has rewarded Chioma Ajunwa, Nigeria’s individual Olympic gold medalist, with a three-bedroom apartment.

Sanwo-Olu announced the reward on Thursday at Lagos House, Alausa, where he hosted Ajunwa, who is an assistant commissioner of police.

The governor said the 50-year-old would be getting the three-bedroom flat at the Babatunde Raji Fashola housing estate in Iponri, Lagos.

He added that the donation was to fulfil a 25-year pledge of the then government.

Sanwo-Olu’s reward came after Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the then Lagos state administrator, promised Ajunwa a house for winning the gold medal in the long jump at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

“Chief Mrs Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, it could have been delayed for twenty-five but today, she’s the owner of three-bedroom flat in Lagos at the famous Raji Fashola housing estate in Iponri,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“It can be seen that indeed it could have taken 25-years to fulfil the promise today but it is a promise that is deserving.”

After the feat in 1996, Chioma became the country’s only individual Olympic gold medalist and the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a field event.

She is also the first and only woman to compete in the FIFA Women’s World Cup as a footballer as well as the Olympic games doing track and field.
