Lekan Fatodu, senior special assistant on SDGs to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor, has launched an initiative to improve the participation of residents in the governorship and state assembly elections.

Fatodu, who rolled out what he called the ‘APC Polling Unit Challenge’, said the public, particularly Lagos APC members, should be adequately acquainted with the “invaluable gains” of coming out to vote.

He said this would enable them to put the right leaders in government.

Fatodu noted that voting for the right leaders would improve the quality of life of the citizens, elevate sound public policy, and advance development.

The governor’s aide said the number of accredited voters at the presidential election in Lagos, “which was less than 25 percent of the registered voters”, was too low for the prime economic, social, and commercial status of Lagos.

He said the position can be enhanced through the participation of citizens in elections to usher in good leaders.

He said Lagos needs to show a better example in the coming election, noting that it is expected that members and supporters of the party would lead the way through the challenge.

Fatodu said with over two million registered members in Lagos alone, APC supporters must prove their worth as democratically conscious citizens and active party members.

“PUC presents an opportunity for committed members of APC and genuine supporters of the party in Lagos State to show their ability to convince people in their various polling units to come out and vote for Governor Sanwo-Olu and APC candidates for the State Assembly and contribute towards raising citizen participation in the governorship election and state assembly elections in Lagos State,” he said.

Fatodu added that the major benefit to the participants is the “invaluable sense of fulfillment to contributing to the advancement of the democratic process in their polling unit and communities and the renewed confidence to challenge and demand for development projects and interventions that should be immediately addressed by political leadership”.

Registration for participation in the challenge can be done via www.pollingunitchallenge.com
