Another appointment, another objection. Since President Muhammadu Buhari started making appointments after his inauguration, there have been complaints from several parts of Nigeria that he is not respecting the principle of federal character. The appointment of Ahmed Lawal Kuru to replace Mustafa Chike-Obi as the MD/CEO of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) on Tuesday has sent tongues wagging again.
Although most of the objections appear to be coming from the south-east and south-south, some voices from the south-west and north-central are also getting louder against what they view as heavily tilted appointments in favour of the core north, where the president hails from. They argue that in the interest of national unity and cohesion, Buhari should make a deliberate attempt to balance the appointments.
However, that is just one side of the argument. There are also commentators who insist that merit should come before federal character and Buhari should only be criticised if he is appointing people who are not qualified to hold those positions. Yet some argue that it is too early in the day to judge Buhari, as there are still hundreds of appointments to be made.
What do you think? Kindly drop us a vote and a line…

While I am a supporter of the present government and the hope that it will help reverse the decay in the country. The new CEO of AMCON does not have enough experience and cannot be the best candidate that Nigeria can offer for such a position. It is also clear that all the banks he has worked have been failing banks. I am of the opinion that his appointment is being done by Buhari as a favour to someone and that should not be the case in the current dispensation.
This man was made MD to start a bank from a failing bank, he was not responsible for the failure of the old bank.
In reality you don’t expect PMB to treat a region that gave him 85% of vote same as a region that gave him 15% of vote. Of course the region that gave him higher vote are more intelligent and they deserves immediate and juicer appointment. Dazzo……. Keep supporting PMB
Do you realize that election is quite different from governance?
You are right my brov.
The man already said that and he is implemnting it to the latter
If i can remember vividly what the president said ab initio that appointment will be based on merit and the way most appointments are skewed to favour a section of this country,it shouldn’t take a baby of 6 months old to discern that Mr.president is not being fair
The summary of the whole rationale is that it is only a section of this country that has capacity for merit…What a nation.!
The truth is that so far, the appointments are lopsided (anybody that says otherwise is clearly not being truthful). But i don’t care. what i care about is for the country to move forward. whether na hausa man dem appoint, or yoruba man or igbo man…..let the work be done! Who appointment help? Where did Ex-President Jonathan’s ‘federal-character appointments” lead us?
@Dike you are a professional MUMU. People who did not know were rain started beating them will not know where it will stop
Nigeria is heavily divided. Buhari has the rare opportunity of uniting Nigeria and going down in history as a true Nationalist. But the manner of his appointments is so lopsided that even his best of friends and supporters are fast becoming uncomfortable. I do not have the slightest doubt that PMB means well for Nigeria. But my fear is that he may be inadvertently arming his enemies to destroy him and Nigeria.
First, it’s way too early to judge President Buhari against any Nigerian President in history.
I guess because much is expected of President and that explains why some people are already judging him.
I don’t remember anyone judging Jonathan and or OBJ by this time in their Presidency.
President Buhari’s appointment so far are excellent and it appears as if he’s much more worried about the results than some stupid national character B/S.
Zonning or National Character is unproductive, stupid and it gives way to mediocre such as former President Jonathan to take our country back a decade.
I am a Nigerian born Canadian and American citizens and I don’t know of any country that practiced zoning. It doesn’t really matter where our leadership comes from as long as they do the right thing. How many times have someone from your state, village or neck of the wood done anything for you? Example, former President Jonathan did nothing for his village and the state of Bayelsia for six despite the UNO asking the oil spillage in his village cleaned up – but he never did because he was too busy.
Such uninformed pedestrian comment. If you don;t know, please ask rather than spreading falsehood. I normally do not go out of my way to respond to such, but on this occasion I’ll indulge you. Below are cpaital Projects executed by President Jonathan in Bayelsa state (incl Otuoke):
BAYELSA STATE:
* Establishment of a new Federal University in Otuoke
* Periodic maintenance of East – West – Odi Road
* Gbarain sub power station (225mw) revitalized
* SURE – P Project on Primary Health Care (PHC)
* e –wallet system in the distribution of Agricultural
Inputs to the farmers and the Dry Season Farming
Projects
* Construction of the federal Government Secretariat in
Yanagoa.
* Central Ogbia Regional Water Supply Project in
Otuoke
* Construction of Jetties at Yenogoa
* NDDC Electrification Projects in Peremabiri –
Ogbokiri in Akassa Bayelsa State.
* Establishment of Maritime Institute at the Niger Delta
University Amasoma.
Mr President needs to be highly applauded over the recent appointments. He is raising standard that would have never been attainable in past government. We voted in CHANGE, should we expect any less? Instead of cursing this country, i suggest we pray ernestly for our appointtees that God bless them with wisdom to lead this country out its predicaments its in! Forget zonin system of offices and concentrate more on the credibility and competence of those appointed. My fellow youths we need to pray, the future of this country lies in our hands….
