The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited Toyin Saraki, wife of the senate president, for questioning over yet unspecified matters, but tongues are already wagging that it is politically motivated. The timing and the circumstances have been described as suspicious.
It is an open secret that Senate President Bukola Saraki, who was governor of Kwara state from 2003-2011, is in the bad books of the powers that be, having contested for the senate presidency against their wishes. He and President Muhammadu Buhari have not been on speaking terms since the June 9 rebellion.
Pro-Saraki APC senators are alleging that the EFCC is going after Saraki’s wife as part of a strategy to get at him, while the PDP senators have vowed to resist any move to remove the senate president. Meanwhile, the APC hierarchy is yet to speak, but it would not be surprising if it is not in support of EFCC.
Many would rather argue that if Saraki’s wife has a case to answer, then she should face the music. If she doesn’t have a case, then she should defend herself and clear her name.
