YOUR SAY: Did Kukah really endorse corruption?

Matthew Hassan Kukah, catholic bishop of the Sokoto diocese, caused quite some stir in the public arena recently when he asked President Muhammadu Buhari to focus more on governance rather than probes. He also appeared to suggest that former President Goodluck Jonathan was being publicly lynched over allegations of corruption “without evidence”.

In the now controversial interview with Channels TV, Kukah said Nigerians are worried that the Buhari government is yet to unfold a vision for Nigeria and that the goodwill and opportunities provided by the May 29 transition are being gradually frittered away. He further said he was not opposed to probes but they should follow due process.

His statements have been interpreted differently. The majority opinion, it would seem, is that Kukah is indirectly asking Buhari not to probe Jonathan’s government. This has generated a lot of negative media for the bishop. However, some are also saying he was simply advising Buhari to put his energy into governance and allow the probes to follow due process?

What is your own opinion on Kukah’s intervention? Kindly let us know!

  1. These guys should get off it already! President Jonathan was bounded BY LAW
to leave office. he should not be thanked for obeying the law. Fr Kukah’s
generation should please leave Nigeria alone to be a nation of law. GEJ did
his part and if he is found wanting should be properly JAILED. And no one
is thanking him for leaving when he lost. Even if he went to war, will his
own family be eventually spared? Please gimme a break.

  2. It obvious that the church in Nigeria as led by Ayo Oritsajafor and the likes of Fr. M. Kukah have been compromised and defending corruption and stealing even when its effects are devastating to the followers of Christ. So, there’s no ambiguity here in his defense of GEJ. We’ll all soon appear before the Lord. The reverend gentlemen should hold their breath, everybody will give account of himself before the Lord Jesus Christ.

  3. Clergy man getting involved in politics instead of winning lost souls. What is duty as clergman before Boko gained ground in the north? They supposed to preach for lost souls not interfere in politics

    1. Absolutely true. I’m disappointed in his stance on corruption. He was well respected in the North but today he has spoken clearly in support of corruption and corrupt regimes, I will therefore single out the Sultan of Sokoto & Cardinal John Onaiyekan as the most credible in the peace committee.

  4. It is very unfortunate, religion is encouraging corruption. Why is Bishop Kukah was angry because President Buhari refused to accept their lobby to spare Jonathan Administration for probe. Let Bishop Kukah remove the white garment and wear the garment of sycophant and political consultant. He is a disgrace to religious leaders.

  5. God/Allah please give us more men like Kukah, who can look up to the president and tell him the hard truth sycophants cant tell him to the face

  6. From what Bishop Kukah said and what was reported in the media, I am not of the view he is in support of corruption. As a priest whatever he says has to be tempered unlike human right activists. It’s not all that GEJ did in office that are bad, he had a few good ones only that he was a weak leader surrounded by opportunists and hounds who want to be in the money that overwhelmed him. What PMB is doing now that is referred to as being slow is to lay a very good foundation for the governance of Nigeria. Those who are crying loud that he is too slow are not really fair to the President. No one will pack into a dirty spider’s web draped apartment without first thoroughly cleaning it out. President MB in addition needs to strengthen the enforcement and other anti-corruption institutions in the country to be able to deliver what majority of Nigerians who voted for him expect from his government.

  7. Why must religious leaders even talk on sensitiive issue like this to the extent of being one sided. Even if it is only corruption that PMB can end, all well and good. We are too drained by vampires of the previous admisnistration. And if we could beg on behalf of the past administration, then we are hypocrite going to church to pray against Devil.

  8. In an an atmosphere where jungle justice is threatening to reign supreme, a word of the wisdom from the Bishop will obviously be misconstrued. The Bishop remains a shining light to people of dark conscience. God has made him, and no one can unmake him.
