Since he became senate president on June 9, neither Bukola Saraki nor the senate has known peace. His party, APC, felt betrayed by his decision to go against the preferred choice of Ahmad Lawan. This was further worsened by the emergence of Ike Ekweremadu of the PDP as his deputy.
It all looked like Saraki’s days were numbered, starting with the probe of his wife, Toyin, by the EFCC, and the cold shoulder he has been receiving from President Muhammadu Buhari. The alleged forgery of senate rules to elect him as senate president also came on the front burner for a while, but Saraki appeared to be unshakable. But it is no longer looking pretty for him.
The Conduct of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has charged him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over allegations of false declaration of assets. The possible sanction include forfeiture of assets and a 10-year ban from holding public office. Most importantly, he could be asked to vacate the senate as part of the sanctions.
Saraki, however, failed to appear before the tribunal on Friday on the basis of a motion he filed before an Abuja high court, while the tribunal has ordered his arrest for not obeying the summons. The senate president has alleged political persecution without mentioning names, but this is believed to refer to the president. But many are also saying he should go and defend himself and not hide before any excuse.

Well, I don’t care. He should just come clean!
For anyone that suggest that Saraki is being persecuted, they are either suffering from Stockholm syndrome or are totally ethically bankrupt. For the avoidance of doubt, there is no country in the world where politicians are above the law, but in Nigeria we let our politicians truncate the law in the name of sentiment and ethnic clownish.
Saraki is not above the law. All he needs to do is to show up at CCT, plead not guilty and defend himself. There is a reason we have a court to begin with.
If Saraki is allowed to get away with treating court as irrelevant institution, he will not only set a bad precedent but destroy the fabrics of judicial institution in Nigeria. Anyone, from elite to ordinary citizen can now defile court order in the name of political persecution.
Stockholm syndrome is the right thing.
The family single handedly ruled Kwara state as if the state belongs the family alone so they felt above the laws. How can Senate President who prisedes over the law refuses to obey it? Nigerian please be wise and don’the alow excuses but face the law.
