Schweinsteiger sets new European record

Bastian Schweinsteiger has set a German record for most European Championship appearances after coming in as a substitute in the Euro 2016 championship game against Northern Ireland.

The midfielder’s substitute appearance in the 2-0 win over Ukraine drew him level with retired Germany legend Phillip Lahm on 14.

But Schweinsteiger has now overtaken Lahm in Germany’s Group C clash against Northern Ireland.

No player has made more competition appearances than ex-France defender Lilian Thuram and former United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar for Holland on 16.

Despite his impressive statistics at international level, his future at Old Trafford remains in doubt.

The Manchester Evening News claimed last week that the former Bayern Munich ace will meet Jose Mourinho to talk about his role at Old Trafford.

The experienced playmaker suffered an injury-plagued debut season at Old Trafford. Both Schweinsteiger and the wider team struggled for the better parts of  the 2015/2016 season.
