Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested two suspects over the theft of metallic drainage covers in Lagos

In a tweet on his official X handle, Jubril Gawat, senior special assistant to the governor on new media, said the suspects — Jubreel Haruna and Adewale Rabiu—were arrested around 5 am on Tuesday in the Lekki area.

The governor’s aide said the security operatives intercepted the suspects as they loaded the drainage covers into a commercial bus.

“Around 5:00 a.m. today, operatives of Rapid Response Squad (@rrslagos767) on patrol of Freedom Way, Ikate, Lekki, arrested two suspects stealing fabricated metal drainage covers in the area,” Gawat said.

“The two suspects were loading the drainage covers into a mini bus popularly called “Korope” with the registration number KTU 45 YD when the operatives accosted them.

“The suspects are Jubreel Haruna (29) and Adewale Rabiu (27).”

Gawat said the suspects will be prosecuted.

“They have been charged to court for prosecution in line with the directives of Commander RRS, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi,” he said.

Uprooting metallic drainage covers for sale in the black market is rife in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital and most populous city.

The practice means most of the roads in the city have become death traps, with holes emerging from nowhere in the middle of a regular commute.
