The senate has called on the federal government to repair dilapidated roads across the country and ensure the north-east is included in ongoing highway projects.
The lawmakers made the resolution on Thursday following a motion by Danjuma Goje, lawmaker representing Gombe central senatorial district.
While moving his motion, Goje said on February 3, the federal executive council (FEC) approved the sum of N4.2 trillion for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar highway and the rehabilitation of other roads of which only two in the north-east were captured.
The senator said there are at least 12 other roads in the north-east that are “vital” to the development of the geo-political zone and country at large.

“The north-east is the only zone that is not connected to the super highway projects embarked upon by this administration,” he said.
“The laudable intention behind the conception of these projects is to ensure connectivity by improving road safety with the aim of harnessing the viability of resources that abound across the length and breadth of this country, with a view to stimulating economic growth and development.”
The senate also commended the federal government “for embarking on these ambitious and laudable projects that would go a long way to guarantee socio-economic and political wellbeing of the citizenry of this country”.

The motion was adopted by lawmakers after it was put to a voice vote by Godswill Akpabio, the senate president.
