Tension in senate over Amaechi’s confirmation

‎The atmosphere at the senate got tensed over the ministerial confirmation of Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers state.

Resuming from a closed session, the lawmakers argued across party lines.

Biodun Olujimi, a PDP lawmaker from Ekiti state, had earlier raised a point of order, asking the senate to suspend the confirmation of ministerial nominees until it considered the report of the committee on ethics on Amaechi.

But Senate President Bukola Saraki ruled her out of order.

Saraki had called on, Sam Anyanwu, chairman of ethics and privileges committee, to present the report of the investigation of the petition against Amaechi.

In his presentation, Anyanwu recommended that the president nominates another candidate from Rivers.

George Sekibo, a PDP senator from Rivers, also gave several reasons why Amaechi should not be confirmed but the APC senators stood their ground forcing their PDP colleagues to stage a walk out.
