The senate has confirmed Hashimu Argungu, a retired deputy inspector-general of police (DIG), as the chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The upper legislative chamber also confirmed Onyemuche Nnamani as the secretary of the commission and Frederick Lakanu as a member.

The nominees were confirmed on Thursday after Ahmed Abdulhamid, chairman of the senate committee on police affairs, presented a report for consideration.

While presenting his report, Abdulhamid said the nominees met the requirements expected of them.

“The nominations of the nominees satisfy section 154 of the 1999 Constitution as amended and senate standing orders 2023,” the senator representing Jigawa east said.

“The committee was satisfied with their qualifications.”

Ahmad Lawan, the senator representing Yobe north, while citing their qualifications, said the nominees are fit to hold office.

“I want to commend the committee of police affairs for a very good job. The nominees are qualified, and we hope that when they are confirmed, they will do a good job,” he said.

President Bola Tinubu appointed Argungu in June.

Argungu is succeeding Solomon Arase, a former inspector-general of police (IGP), as chairman of the PSC.

In March 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari swore in Arase as the PSC chairman after confirmation by the senate.
