The senate has passed a bill seeking to establish the North Central Development Commission.

The bill passed third reading after Benson Konbowei, deputy chair of the senate committee on special duties, presented a report for consideration.

Konbowei, who represents Bayelsa central, said the bill would bring governance closer to the people of the north-central region.

In May, the upper legislative chamber passed a bill on the establishment of the North West Development Commission.

After the establishments of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC), other geopolitical zones commenced lobbying for their own commissions.

The NEDC was established following the devastation of the north-east by insurgents.

There are also attempts to establish the South East Development Commission.
