Senate will consult experts, AGF over tax bills, says Sani Musa

Sani Musa, chairman of the senate committee on finance

Sani Musa, chairman of the senate committee on finance, says the senate will consult experts and the attorney-general of the federation (AGF) over the tax reform bills.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Musa assured that the senate will develop legislation from the tax reform bills to help Nigeria achieve a trillion-dollar economy.

He said President Bola Tinubu had tasked the national assembly with the goal, adding that the legislature remained committed to enacting a tax law that would be accepted across the country.

The chairman said following the recently concluded public hearing on the tax reform bills, the committee would consider stakeholders’ input based on their merits.

“We are going to give this country a piece of legislation that is workable. We will review everything and, after this, go on a three-day retreat for consultations with experts,” Musa said.

“We are also consulting with the Attorney-General of the Federation to ensure the law is constitutional and practical.”

In support of the initiative, Abdul Ningi, senator representing the Bauchi Central, described the bills as crucial for national development, dismissing claims of regional opposition.

“This tax reform has embraced a Nigerian dimension, not a north-south dichotomy,” he said.

On October 3, 2024, Tinubu asked the national assembly to consider and pass four tax reform bills.
